Sand Sculptures at Dublin Castle

Sand Sculptures at Dublin Castle

I made an interesting discovery this Summer while spending a day in Dublin with my friend from Wicklow before heading off to the International Quilt Show in Birmingham for the day.  Every year for quite some time sand sculptures are created in the courtyard of Dublin Castle for us all to go and see free of charge just like the Museum itself.  I was stunned when I arrived.  Sometime at the beginning of the Summer sand is brought in and layered and tamped down between each layering in wooden frames.  Once this process is complete the upper layers of the wooden frame are removed and the sand is sculpted according to the theme of the year.  Once the sculpting is finished the bottoms of the wooden frames are removed and there you have it.  It is so tightly packed that the weather doesn’t affect it and infact a little rain helps it as if it is too dry the sand is inclined to blown away.  If you are in Dublin next Summer I would highly recommend going to see the sand sculptures at Dublin Castle.
