Portumna Castle

Portumna Castle

DSC_0603I have been so lucky this past Summer to see so much of Ireland that I have not experienced before along with returning to much loved places as well.  One of my new adventures was to Portumna Castle, we spent a week in Clare at the end of the Summer in a wonderful town called Mountshannon.  During the week we explored it and the surrounding area.  Portumna Castle being one of those places.  It is a magnificent building which has had extensive work completed and has a long way to go yet.  It was destroyed by a fire in 1826. Since 1968 the building has been reroofed and its giant chimney stacks reinstated and work has been done to the gardens.  It is an impressive building and broke from the traditional style of house being built at the time.  The displays inside the house are very informative and give you a good understanding of the history of the area when the house was originally build.  As you would imagine I love to see old buildings being brought back to life and it was great to see such a magnificent building being preserved for future generations.
