Round Towers

Round Towers of Ireland

Round Tower Nenagh
Round Tower Nenagh

There is something about a round tower that draws you to it, you can see it in the distance and you have to find it.  That was the case in Nenagh, it was built in the 13th century and stands 100 feet high and its base is 53 feet in width.  It has been beautifully restored on the inside with three floors leading to the roof with beautiful views to the surrounding area.  I am always amazed by the staircases in old castle and round towers built so that the person on the upper side of the stairs has an advantage because he can swing his sword.  The precision in the design of the stairs that has them still standing hundreds of years later.  Probably why I love The Old Rectory Leitrim so much.
