Yesterday I got to spend the day in my home county something I don’t get to do often enough and I used it to tick off another of the places on my list to go and see and that was Knowth about a 1,000 years older than New Grange. It is not open all year round and closes at the end of this month. I think it is even more interesting than New Grange although I love New Grange, but Knowth has so much more history to it and it was not just the one mound but also smaller mounds, the smaller ones came first and then the bigger. Our tour guide was fantastic and we had a great discussion about the cairns in Carrow Keel and Carrow More and the development of passage tombs both here and in Europe. 60% of Europes Megalithic art is at Bru na Boinne. You can climb on top of Knowth and from the top you can see the Hill of Tara and the Hill of Slane and if the fires were lit on top of the mounds you could see Lough Crew and Carrow Keel. Such an amazing place – older then the Pyramids.
